Dental crowns
Dental crowns are teeth created in a laboratory by your dentist, which are placed over a natural tooth. They are used to protect a damaged or weakened tooth to prevent future problems or further damage.
For this reason, a crown often serves a protective function, but it is a technique frequently used for cosmetic purposes. Because they look and feel almost identical to natural teeth, crowns give a natural appearance to a smile and are often used to restore the optimal appearance of a damaged smile.
Why are dental crowns used?
As mentioned earlier, dental crowns can be used for a variety of reasons, including:
- To protect a tooth that has received a root canal and is therefore weakened, to prevent it from fracturing;
- To protect a tooth that has received a large filling and for which there is not enough natural structure left;
- To replace a missing tooth, the crown is then placed on a dental implant;
- For aesthetic purposes, to change the natural appearance of a tooth by giving it a new shape and correcting its color.
Placing the dental crown
Two appointments are necessary to proceed with the installation of a dental crown and it is done in several steps:
- After anaesthetizing the area to be treated, your dentist must prepare the tooth that will receive the crown in order to create enough space to accommodate it;
- An impression of the tooth in question and the neighboring teeth is taken. This impression is sent to the laboratory where your crown will be custom-made to fit perfectly in your mouth;
- Since a certain amount of time is needed to make the permanent crown, your dentist will place a temporary crown;
- At the next appointment, the permanent crown is put in place and your dentist will check its fit and finally fix it.
Dental bridges
Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are usually made up of an artificial tooth wedged between two crowns that are placed on two or more prepared teeth.
