How does teeth whitening work?

First of all, the trays must be made by your dentist. To do so, he or she must take an impression of your mouth, which will serve as a model to create the plastic trays specially adapted to the shape of your teeth.

At home, you can then apply the whitening gel provided by your dentist using a syringe. This gel is composed of peroxide and should be distributed evenly in the tray. The tray should be applied for one hour a day.

Such a treatment is usually spread over two weeks. A follow-up appointment with your dentist will be necessary during the treatment to ensure that you are using the tray and the gel properly.

Tips to follow

If you want your whitening treatment to have an optimal effect, there are a few tips to follow:

• Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly to apply the tray and gel;
• Avoid eating or drinking colored foods (e.g. red wine, grape juice, coffee, tea) during the treatment;
• Avoid smoking during treatment;
• Keep the bleaching gel away from heat sources and, if necessary, store it in the refrigerator.

Your dentist will be able to explain to you what is involved in a whitening treatment. Some side effects are possible, but they are often minimal if you follow your dentist’s advice on how to apply the whitening product. If you experience hypersensitivity following the treatment, consult your dentist so that he can explain how to avoid such an inconvenience.
