At the Dr. Jean-Pierre Tabah Dental Clinic in Montreal, we offer our patients the highest quality dental care.
Your dentist is your ally in maintaining your overall health and visiting him or her regularly will maximize your chances of having a sparkling smile and a healthy mouth.
Dental Cleaning
First, routine checkups will allow your dentist and his team to perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth. Their specialized tools allow them to clean parts of your teeth that brushing and flossing alone cannot completely clean. This deep cleaning will remove tartar, which is the accumulation of hardened plaque, from areas that are difficult to reach when brushing your teeth.
Plaque is a thin, whitish layer that builds up on your teeth as a result of bacteria. Of course, brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day will prevent too much plaque from building up, but your dentist will be able to remove as much as possible during your routine visits. It is important to prevent the accumulation of plaque, which, when too important, turns into tartar and becomes much more difficult to dislodge. Too much tartar build-up can lead to gum disease.
More than just cleaning
In addition to a thorough cleaning of your teeth, routine visits are an opportunity for your dentist to examine your teeth and oral tissues to detect any problems. Your dentist is the only professional qualified to perform such an examination. Some problems, such as cavities, may not cause any symptoms at an early stage, but your dentist has the skills and tools to detect them even at this stage.
Your dentist will also be able to detect certain diseases as soon as they appear and before they have serious consequences for your health. For example, oral cancer is an insidious disease that can be difficult to detect. The survival rate for this type of cancer is relatively low because the diagnosis is often made at an advanced stage, which greatly complicates the treatment and reduces the chances of success.
This is why, beyond cleaning your teeth, routine visits to your dentist are of paramount importance in maintaining your health.
Cost of routine visits
At the clinic, we apply the standard rates recommended by the ACDQ for specialized treatments. However, please note that the prices for routine examinations and cleanings performed at our clinic are less expensive than those indicated in the ACDQ guide. An estimate of the cost of your routine visit can be requested prior to treatment.
The cost of routine visits is a fraction of some restorative treatments. Therefore, paying these fees will decrease your chances of needing a more complex and expensive treatment.
Frequency of routine visits
We generally recommend two routine visits per year to maintain optimal oral health. However, some conditions may require closer monitoring of the condition of your mouth and teeth. If you have had cavities in the past, or if you suffer from gum disease, you may need more rigorous follow-up to avoid complications. Also, certain illnesses, such as diabetes, represent an important risk factor for the development of oral diseases.
By knowing the condition of your mouth and teeth as well as your overall health, your dentist will be able to advise you on the frequency of routine visits that your condition requires.
